India Data Residency is here!
Yep, Atlassian has added India to their list of regions where you can “pin” your user-generated content, product information, and other sensitive data. The US, EU, Australia, Germany, Singapore, and Canada round out the list of other Data Residency regions in Atlassian’s wheelhouse.
What does this mean?
SaaS products are often scrutinized for where data goes, and how it’s transmitted, opening a business risk or worse. Compliance, regulations, and national interest are big drivers of this. So, that means some of India’s most regulated (and fastest growing) industries, such as IT ($200B/yr), healthcare ($300B/yr), and finance (15% CAGR 2022-2027) can now wholly consider Atlassian Cloud over Data Center.
Where data is stored and processed matters, and many Atlassian customers have had to choose their Server or Data Center hosting model, along with the carrying costs of self-hosted infrastructure. Those days in India are now numbered, with data sovereignty now available with Atlassian Cloud.
It’s out, so take action. Converting from Data Center to Atlassian Cloud is a big decision, and involves high-level discussions with finance, security, IT, all the way to executives.
Here’s our advice for Atlassian’s India customers currently on Server or Data Center:
- Ask Why: You should fully consider your reasoning for keeping your Jira on-premise.
- Do the Math: What are the carrying costs of self-hosting? Consider hardware provisioning, security & risk, incident response/handling, and dedicated full-time employees (FTEs). Work with an Atlassian Solution Partner to run licensing cost comparisons.
- Explore the Move: Atlassian Solution Partners can review your current configuration, and see what compliance/regulatory use cases work with Atlassian Cloud. Solution Partners have that experience and share it willingly. They’ll also map out a project plan to get you there.
